Constraints on the Steady-state R-mode Amplitude in Neutron Star Transients

چکیده
Recent observations suggest that neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries rotate within a narrow range of spin frequencies clustered around 300Hz. A proposed explanation for this remarkable fact is that gravitational radiation from a steady-state r-mode oscillation in the neutron star’s core halts the spin-up due to accretion. For the neutron star transients, balancing the time-averaged accretion torque with gravitational wave emission from steady-state, constant amplitude r-mode pulsations implies a quiescent luminosity too bright to be consistent with observations (in particular of Aql X-1). The viscous dissipation (roughly 10MeV per accreted nucleon for a spin of 300Hz) from such an r-mode makes the core sufficiently hot to power a thermal luminosity ∼ 1034 ergs−1 when accretion halts. This is the minimum quiescent luminosity that the neutron star must emit when viscous heating in the core is balanced by radiative cooling from the surface, as is the case when the core of the star is superfluid. We therefore conclude that either the accretion torque is much less than Ṁ(GMR)1/2, or that a steady-state r-mode does not limit the spin rate of the neutron star transients. Future observations with Chandra and XMM promise to further constrain the amount of viscous dissipation in the neutron star core. A Timing Signature of Gravitational Radiation from LMXB Neutron Stars
The coupled evolution of the spin frequency, core temperature, and r–mode amplitude of an accreting neutron star is calculated. We focus on those conditions that can produce persistent gravitational radiation from the rmode. During X-ray quiescent phases of transient LMXBs, one may be able to identify the constant contribution of the gravitational wave emission to the spindown rate. Another sig...
متن کاملEffect of a neutron-star crust on the r-mode instability
The presence of a viscous boundary layer under the solid crust of a neutron star dramatically increases the viscous damping rate of the fluid r-modes. We improve previous estimates of this damping rate by including the effect of the Coriolis force on the boundary-layer eigenfunction and by using more realistic neutron-star models. If the crust is assumed to be perfectly rigid, the gravitational...
متن کاملStrange stars as persistent sources of gravitational waves
We investigate the relevance of the gravitational-wave driven r-mode instability for strange stars. We find that the unstable r-modes affect strange stars in a way that is quite distinct from the neutron star case. For accreting strange stars we show that the onset of r-mode instability does not lead to the thermo-gravitational runaway that is likely to occur in neutron stars. Instead, the stra...
متن کاملRunaway Heating By R-Modes of Neutron Stars in Low Mass X-ray Binaries
Recently Andersson et. al., and Bildsten have independently suggested that an r-mode instability might be responsible for stalling the neutron-star spin-up in strongly accreting, Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs). We show that if this does occur, then there are two possibilities for the resulting neutron-star evolution: If the r-mode damping is a decreasing function of temperature, then the star ...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
